Thinking of a new blog topics to write is part of the daily task for most of the bloggers. Choosing on the wrong topic to write is going to be a waste of time because it takes a lot of time to just write a good blog post.

But, don’t expect that all your blog post is going to do well, even though you thinking that you’re choosing on the right topics that people will want to read.

Sometimes we all make mistake, misjudging on the competition, the lack of audience interest in a topic, or maybe the quality of the job of our own writing.

I’ve blog posts which I’ve put in a lot of effort into and it’s doing well, but I also have a similar blog posts that just have zero traction.

Sometimes it’s about the quality of your blog post, sometimes it’s just about luck, and sometimes it’s just about the timing you choose to write that blog post.

Here, I’m going to share with you something which I’ve learned from years of doing this. I’ll show you some of the signs that will tell you if you’re choosing on the wrong blog topics or not.

1. You are writing on a wrong topic for the wrong audiences.

Let’s say you’ve a blog about health and home gardening. Whenever you’re writing about home gardening, the health audiences will get bored, and vice versa because the 2 audiences are contradictory and both didn’t have the same interest.

2. You’re writing a blog post which you think no one else is serving that audiences

A lot of bloggers believe they’ve to be unique, therefore they hunt for a topic that nobody else is writing, thinking that the absence of competition will make them stand out of the crowd.

But truly, they’re just screwing themselves up. When there is nobody else around, who is going to link to you? Where do you think your visitors will come from?

If you’re writing on topics that no one else is writing, you’ve to think twice again. Most of the time, when there is no one writing a blog post on a certain topics, it is an alert sign that you should stop wasting time on that blog post topic.

Exactly the same rule applies to social sharing. In every 1 out of 100 visitors of your blog post, there should be at least 1 sharing on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and etc.

The are an exceptions if your audiences are either from the group of 60 years and above or technophobic. Normally, the sharing percentage of this two group of people are very low.

5. Your blog post topic fails the “For Dummies” test.

I guess, you probably know the book series “for Dummies”, right?

Great, here’s a simple method to test the viability of you topic: visit this website and see if there is a Dummies book which have been published about it.

If there’s a book written about this topic, it’s most likely that the topic is popular and good enough to support a blog. The organization behind the books, John Wiley & Sons, have spends million of dollars in doing topic research for their books. So, they can’t be wrong.

6. There are no other blogs with over 20K subscribers.

It may be a sign that you might be choosing on the wrong blog post topics to write if there are no other blogs in your industry that have at least 20,000 subscribers. of course it’ll be better if you can find other blogs that have more than 20k of subscribers.

The reason is because when there are a lot of popular blogs in that space, there will be many chances that people might link and send visitors to you. The greater number of competition there is, the easier it is. This may be counterintuitive, but it is real.

7. There aren’t any magazines on your topics at Barnes & Nobles.

Head over to your closest Barnes & Noble store and look at magazine racks. If you’re able to find a magazine about the topic of your blog post which you’re writing, it’s very likely that the niche is popular and big enough to support a blog site. In case you cannot find any, then it’s a sign of a wrong topic for writing a blog post.

8. Google monthly searches is less than 100k.

Google is always there to tell you on the number of individuals who are looking for info on your topic.

If your blog fits in a single (or maybe more) of the 7 categories, you’ve a great shot, because it’s proven that many bloggers is doing well in these categories and there are lots of people to link to you.

However, sometimes if you’re fighting an uphill battle, it doesn’t exactly shows that you have chosen a wrong topic, but it’s because the niche of yours hasn’t matured yet and it may take a longer time to get success.

My advice for you is to do some thinking. Rather than selecting a topic willy nilly and hoping that everything will turn out perfectly, do some research using the indicators above as guideposts, and always ask yourself what it all means.

Becoming a successful blogger is not all about luck any more. Those who make it think strategically, map out a strategy, and work real hard to achieve that.
